Chipping Warden church

Chipping Warden
St. Peter & St.Paul, Chipping Warden. (No, I don't know what it is, either.)
Reader Steve Haas writes:-
"As a former resident of Chipping Warden, I can put you out of your misery.

The strange pile in the foreground of the photo is the remains of the Medieval market steps, where they auctioned off livestock and such on market days. Way back when, Chipping Warden was a lot more than it is today. A relatively major market town on the main Banbury to Daventry road. The place basically burned to the ground in the 15th century....the only standing buildings left were the church, the manor house and it's attached church, and a few stone buildings....plus, of course the steps of the market.

Apparently, the auctioneer stood at the top of the steps so he could have a good view of the prospective buyers and the item being sold was displayed at the base of the steps."
