FROM SCRATCHWOOD TO WYCHWOOD

Crouch Hill

Banbury, we come across another of those sites of unfulfilled potential. Crouch Hill, by its British (Welsh) name, reminds us that other cultures had held this land, and, although defeated, they were never entirely wiped off the face of the earth.

For instance, the procession of the pagan fertility rite of the Fine Lady on a White Horse began in the woods of Crouch Hill.

Mind you, Crouch Hill is the only British name in these immediate parts. The Saxons again. They did put themselves about a bit.
